Should schools have a school magazine?

School wants to have a school magazine. Is this a good thing?

The school magazine is useful. You can know what has happend in the school. Students will be able to write articles for the magazine. The breaks will not be boring, everyone will read the school magazine.

On the other hand, we don't have enough students to write for this magazine and the school needs money to print it.

A school magazine is very useful, however, there are many advantages and disadvantages of this idea.

From 21 August till 3rd September teachers Julia Karasz from Hungary and Danuta Radomska-Filipek from Poland took part in a course Management in ELT. Both teachers received the Comenius -Teachers' Mobility grant.
The course was provided by the NILE - Norwich Institute for Language Learning. The main lecturer was Mr Terry Philips. The participants were from: Bulgaria, Columbia, Germany, Hungary, Korea, Poland, Portugal, Romania, and Turkey. Most of them stayed at University of East England campus.

Alternative sources of energy in Dub nad Moravou school.

On Wednesday 22nd June 2011, a project day focused on alternative sources of energy took place at Dub nad Moravou school. Children were divided into groups and participated in 5 workshops gradually. They all worked on a variety of tasks - mathematical, chemical, scientifical, ICT , linguistic and art ones. After the project students should be more familar with wind, water, thermal and solar energy , counting the annual energy consumption, and searching info about energy on the net. Children were really keen on experiencing scientifical experiements with energy on their own.

Immediatelly after the come back of the Czech group from Romania,the project wall board was used for dissemination of information about the meeting. Students are glad to see what their schoolmates did in Bucharest and to get more info about our partner school. The ones who participated in previous mobilities compare their own experience with Radka, Ondra, Míša and Pavla.

The Czech teachers and students came back home from Bucharest enriched with a fantastic experience. The students wrote a short report about their stay there and emphasized how happy they were at host families and participating in the programme and frankly said this trip was the best experience of their school year.

Ms. Renata Miler and Ms. Krystyna Szczęsny teach the Polish language to four-formers. Last week their students prepared a memory game. They drew 12 pictures and teachers provided them with 12 words in three languages: Czech, Hungarian and Romanian. To make the game easier each group had a special list of words. The winners were girls. However, now every student from class four knows that om means man in Romanian, nő means woman in Hungarian and had. means snake in Czech.

Spring is a time of baby animals, nice flowers and the nature waking up after winter. Children in Dub have lots of pets and many of them have babies at this time. Cats and dogs are our favourites!
The small green frog went on the sun every day and found its place on a bright red wrapping paper from some wafers. Normally we would clean this waste from the grass into a bin, but the frog used it as a beach pad!

Mathematics- Science Examination

Students carried out the experiment of radish seedlings. They prepared three sets of samples. Each sample contained the same number of identical seedlings. Each set of seedlings was illuminated for 10 days with light of equal intensity, but of a different color: white, red or green. Students measured the growth of plants every day. Define the problem that the students wanted to solve.

A. Does light intensity affect the growth of seedlings of radish?

The Lower Secondary School Exam

The exam is administered by Regional Examination Boards, usually in the student’s own school, in April, in all lower secondary schools in Poland, on the same day fixed by the Director of the Central Examination Board. Every student gets the same exam set with an answer sheet. The exam set used in the examination is selected by the Central Examination Board. Sample exam sets are published in the Syllabus. The first Lower Secondary School Exam took place in 2002.
The Lower Secondary School Exam is a cross-subject exam consisting of two parts (arts and science). The first part tests the abilities and knowledge in the humanities: Polish, History, Civic Education, Art, Music and some educational paths such as Philosophy, Regional Studies, Reading and Media, Polish Culture and the Mediterranean Civilisation. The second part tests the abilities and knowledge in science subjects: Maths, Biology, Geography,
Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy and educational paths such as Health Education or Ecology. The third part of the exam – foreign language – is going to be administered for the first time in 2009.
Open-ended questions solved by a student are assessed and marked by examiners from the Regional Examination Boards. The results of the lower secondary school examination are given as a point score calculated by the Regional Examination Boards. In each part of the lower secondary school examination the maximum score is 50 points. The result is final. Every pupil receives 2 certificates – one confirming graduation from lower secondary school issued by the school and the other detailing the exam score issued by the Regional Examination Board. Both of them are taken into account by secondary schools during the recruitment process.

On 17 March 2011, thirty two Polish students took part in the International Mathematics Test. Some problems were easy to solve, while others much more difficult. Now we are waiting anxiously for our results.

Math Kangaroo 2011 in Dub nad Moravou.

This international mathematical competition became a spring tradition in our school. This year 97 students took part and tried their mathematical knowledge. Generally, we can say that at lower categories the number of successful boys and girls was equal, there are both genders among lower categories winners. But at higher categories there was only one boy among the best participants. We have been observing this interesting fact for years. Although boys are usually supposed to have better mathematical thinking, in our school girls always get better results in this competition!

Here are the best results ( number of points ) at all categories:

Grades 2 and 3 ( 8 - 9 years old ) : 55 points.
Grades 4 and 5 ( 10 - 11 years old ): 77 points.
Grades 6 and 7 ( 12 - 13 years old ): 78 points. Here only students of 6th grade were among the best ones!
Grades 8 and 9 ( 14 - 15 years old ): 66 points.

The school in Dub has been continuing in spring tasks of our project activity calendar. Children at the primary level and at the class for students with special needs focused on creating Art and Craft projects with spring topics. They created a collection of tree posters, 3D bird figures and 3D aquariums with fish. As usually, all the products are being used for decorating our long school corridors.

Every year people of Hungary have a public holiday on 15 March, children do not go to school and adults have a day off. On this day the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence of 1848 is celebrated.

On the last schoolday before 15 March children have a special performance to honour our fathers who wared for freedom in our school. This year Class 4b organised the celebration nicely and movingly.

Earthquake and Tsunami hit Japan

I grew up in Japan. I’m accustomed to earthquakes. But nothing could have prepared me for this one. It was the first time I saw buildings in Tokyo actually sway back and forth.

I watched live TV coverage as the tsunami swept away entire communities. It was like a horror film, but these are real people – thousands are dead, thousands more are missing. In one city, nearly half of the population is still missing.

And now we're gripped with the fear of radiation from nuclear power plants. It's a real-life nightmare.

In the past, Japan has helped the World Food Programme respond to some of the worst disasters around the world. Now, when my country is coping with its own tragedy, I feel proud to stand united with Japan to help people in need.

I’m deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from all over the world. Thanks to the generosity of friends like you, in just 36 hours we raised all the funds we require for our operation in Japan. Thank you.

Amid the devastation left behind by the earthquake and tsunami, transporting goods is an enormous challenge, but families remain in desperate need of emergency supplies and WFP is providing its expertise to make sure those supplies are delivered quickly.

As the lead logistics agency for the United Nations in emergency operations, WFP has decades of experience in delivering food and other relief items in the most difficult environments.

It will take a long time to recover from this disaster. But, between the heroic rescue efforts coordinated by the Japanese government and the incredible support of the international community, I know we’ll get there.

Biology lessons in Dub - reports finished

After a long time without a biology teacher , our school finally finished the reports necessary for our final joint product - a scientific report. All the photos that were taken during the long months of working on this task are interesting, showing the life in our school. The photos of microscopic findings in water samples look very attractive, being taken thanks to our new electric microscope.
As a result of working on this project task our school has gained not only new equipment for chemical and biological testing, but mainly students were enriched with new experience and spent funny time while learning new things.

Young Demosthenes - rhetoric competition in Dub nad Moravou

Young Demosthenes is a popular rhetoric competition for students here in the Czech Republic. It starts at a school level and its winners take part in regional levels. In Dub nad Moravou school it has become a regular December event. Year by year, the number of participating students is higher. The choice of verbal means , gesticulation and other non - verbal means, fluency, contact with audiance - these are the most important things assessed at the speakers.
The winner if a lower category _ grade 6. and 7. was Filip Konečný. His speech was very attractive as he told the audiance about his favourite animals - guinea pigs.
Radka Lajčíková, the winner of category for 8th and 9th grade, had a speech about her week day morning. It was very funny and interesting.
Although they did not win at a regional competition in January in Olomouc, we are happy that Young Demosthenes is such a popular competition in our school.

The deadline -21 February

Although 21 February is the deadline for a submission of a new Comenius project, six schools finished completing their Application Form on 15 February. The form was submitted online on 2011-02-15 17:41:26. All Partners from Sweden, Hungary, Italy, Germany and Romania were assisting the Polish coordinator while she pressed the button 'submit'. Now we need to wait till July to find out if we are accepted or no.

We collect the garbage selectively with my family. We don't make the tap leak unneccessairly. We plant plants into the garden. We don't spread litter in the environment. My brother goes to his school by bicycle and I go on foot. As there are a lot of birds, we build birdhouse for them. I turn off the light in the room where I do not stay. Every little thing can help a lot for the environment.

Global Problems - Alternative sources of energy.

The Virtual Eden programme comprises an activity related to global problems, which is to be done in January. On 27th January, Romanian students presented projects and essays on this topic, they made Power Point presentations and delivered interesting speeches under the guidance of Mrs. Tudor Georgeta. The aims of this activity are to raise the students’ awareness of the global issues leading to global warming, and to focus on alternative sources of energy. The students who participated in the project meetings in the partner countries, have carried out comparative studies regarding these alternative sources of energy in Romania, Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary.

One of my favourite shops is New Look. New Look is a big British company selling clothes, shoes and accessories. Founder of this chain is Tom Singh. Shops of New Look are located in different countries such as the United Kingdom, Belgium, Frnace, the Netherlands, Ireland, malta, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates. This shop is designed for women form 16 to 30 years old. In New Look you can find many fashin clothes. They aren't too expensive so they have a lot of regular customers. I really like shops of New Look because they have a lot of things to choose from and their clothes fit in with my style.

FOCUS
My favourite shopping center in Focus.

It is located in the center of Jastrzębie Zdrój on Podhalańska Street, just next to the roundabout. Focus is a huge shopping mall and there are many shops where you can buy almost everything. The best shop is Flo. I can buy there funny gifts for different occasions. The best shop with clothes is Bereshka. I like it because there are wonderful and original clothes. I like to go to KFS for lunch after shopping. In my free time I meet my friends in the restaurant where we can drink coffee. People who work in Focus are very nice so the atmosphere there is great. It is possible to have a nice time there. It’s definitely my favourite shop.

BIEDRONKA

Biedronka in English means Ladybird. This is a name of a medium supermarket. In our town Jastrzębie-Zdrój we have six such shops. I like to go there and buy needed products. Everyday on offer there are many promotions. Everything in this shop is well-made. I can buy there : drinks, dairy products, meat, fruit, vegetables, baker goods, desserts and other as well as beauty products and chemicals.. People who work in Biedronka are very nice and helpful. If I can’t find products which I need to buy I can ask a shop assistant and she helps me. This is my favourite supermarket because I can buy everything what I need and I don’t have to go far. It is a very cheap shop but products are well-made.

Agnieszka Kaczmarska, a school pedagogue, came up with the idea to organize a competition to discover hidden talents among students. On December, 6th, “The Got Talent” event took place in our school. After earlier qualification, over 20 participants had an opportunity to present themselves. They showed their talents in front of jury, the whole school audience and cameras. Most of us were surprised by our peers. The show was hosted by incredible professional Karol and Paweł. The Principal, Mathematics, Music and Religion teachers were the judges. The singer Victoria was the winner. The third places was taken ex aequo by two other singers. The second place was taken by Artur who surprised everybody with his ability to juggle two balls. The event was great fun for the whole school community.

FREDERIC CHOPIN

Chopin was one of the greatest composers of Romantic music (1815 - 1910).

During that music period the composers were inspired by the nature, old legends and folk music and when it comes to Chopin he had a special love for Polish folk dances.

How much do you know about one of Poland’s greatest composer?

Frédéric Chopin was born in the village of Żelazowa Wola, near Warsaw in 1810. Chopin's father was Nicolas Chopin, a Frenchman from Lorraine who had emigrated to Poland in 1787 at the age of sixteen and had served in Poland's National Guard during the Kościuszko Uprising. In 1806 he married a Polish woman Justyna Krzyżanowska. Frédéric was the couple's second child and only son. In October 1810, when Chopin was seven months old, the family moved to Warsaw, where his father began to teach French language at the Warsaw Lyceum. Chopin's father played the flute and violin; his mother played the piano and gave lessons to boys in the elite boarding house that the Chopins maintained.

Frédéric showed great admiration for the piano at a very young age. At first his older sister gave him the first piano lessons. At the age of six he received his first professional lessons. By the age of seven he already composed his first pieces of music - two polonaises (Polish dances) and was called the ‘second Mozart’. At the same time, he gave concert performances to impressed audiences.

In 1825, at the age of 15 years, Chopin published his first work (Rondo, op. 1). The next year he started musical theories studies at the Warsaw Conservatory with Jozef Elsner, a Silesian composer who taught at the Conservatory. In early 1829, Chopin performed in Vienna, where he was received with several optimistic reviews. The political situation in Warsaw made him move to Paris. On the road, he learned that the Russians had captured Warsaw. In reaction to that fact he composed the great “Revolutionary Etude”.

In France Frédéric Chopin worked as a pianist, music teacher and composer. He had the opportunity to meet many famous composers and writers, among them were Liszt, Berlioz, Meyerbeer, Bellini, Balzac, Heine, Victor Hugo and Schumann. The 1830s in Paris proved to be a progressive and productive time for Chopin. He completed some of his most popular works and performed regular concerts, receiving fantastic reviews.

Chopin’s favourite instrument was the piano and his works are some of the finest piano compositions ever created. He invented new musical forms such as the ballade, and was the first western composer to use elements of Polish folk music , such as folk dances, in his work. To this day his mazurkas and polonaises are among the greatest masterpieces of Polish national classical music.

Many performers find his music very difficult to play and a real test of their skills. But Chopin’s style is really all about expressing emotions. He said in his letters, “I tell the piano my things I used to tell friends,” and “Sometimes I can only suffer and pour my despair at the piano.” For most of his life, Chopin suffered from poor health. On October 17, 1849, tuberculosis ended the life of a young genius. At the age of 39, Chopin passed away. His funeral was held at the Church of the Madeleine, and he was buried at the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. His heart was entombed at the Church of the Holy Cross in Poland, and Polish soil was sprinkled over his tomb in France, as he had requested.

Chopin still finds many followers and is recognized and enjoyed by audience all over the world. His music is celebrated every five years by the world’s best pianists during the International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious music events in the world.

Results:

Interdisciplinary topics will be supported by this project activity. Nature will be shown not only as a science topic but a theme related to many different subjects. The students will have a panel discussion. The poems written by students will be published on the Wiki.

Homework

Can you imagine yourself having a wild animal as a pet? It sounds exciting, but is it right to keep one at home?

There are certain advantages to keeping wild animals as pets. Firstly, some animals such as snakes, spiders or hedgehogs are really interesting. Our friends can be shocked and excited when they see these animals. Secondly, we can observe the reaction of these animals, for example how they react when they look at other animals. We can learn about their habitats and food.

On the other hand, there are certain drawbacks to keeping animals as pets. First of all, most of them are really dangerous. We are not able to foresee their reaction towards other people. They can attack somebody and they are able to hurt and even to kill a man. Also, it is not natural to keep wild animals in small places or cages so they can become unhappy and aggressive. It is really hard to separate the wild animals from each other because they got accustomed to living in groups.

To sum up, there are strong arguments both for and against keeping wild animals as pets at home. Although most owners try to create the best conditions to protect animals, I believe that people should leave animals in the wild and protect them from danger in their natural homes. Besides, people should stop hunting to raise numbers of endangered animals.

WWF i tygrys

11 września 1961 roku powstała organizacja nazwana WWF. Podczas podróży po Afryce Sir Julian Huxley zwrócił uwagę na ogromne zniszczenie środowiska, które mogło doprowadzić do wymarcia wielu zwierząt na tym kontynencie. Jako dyrektor generalny UNESCO zainicjował utworzenie międzynarodowej fundacji na rzecz ochrony przyrody. Na logo organizacji wybrano jeden z najbardziej zagrożonych gatunków – pandę. Siedzibą organizacji jest Szwajcaria. Od początku swego istnienia organizacja poszerzyła zakres swojej działalności. Oprócz kompleksowej ochrony przyrody, zajmuje się powstrzymywaniem degradacji środowiska naturalnego, czyli m.in. przeciwdziałaniu dziurze ozonowej, zmianom klimatycznym oraz obecności toksycznych chemikaliów w produktach codziennego użytku. W Polsce WWF działa od początku lat dziewięćdziesiątych.

WWF prowadzi bardzo poważną działalność, ale niektóre akcje wywołują uśmiech lub przerażenie. Niejedna mama niedawno przestraszyła się, gdy usłyszała dziki ryk w pokoju uczącego się dziecka. I nie pomogło tłumaczenie, że to tylko ćwiczenie zadania domowego. Tymczasem to była prawda. Zachęceni przez nauczycielkę, uczniowie mieli ryknąć jak prawdziwy tygrys. Skąd takie dziwne zadanie? Chcieliśmy włączyć się do akcji pomocy tygrysom. Bardzo często akcje charytatywne polegają na zbieraniu funduszy. Tym razem można dołożyć własną pomysłowość. W ciągu ostatnich dziesięciu lat zniknęła z powierzchni Ziemi prawie połowa żyjących dziko tygrysów. Jeśli dalej tak pójdzie, to pokolenie dzieci naszych obecnych uczniów będzie mogło oglądać tygrysy tylko w klatkach w zoo. Czy mamy siedzieć i przyglądać się bezczynnie – pyta WWF. Nie! Czy mamy stanąć i krzyczeć? Nie! Mamy stanąć i ryyyyyknąć! Jak prawdziwy tygrys. Pod koniec listopada ma odbyć się szczyt 13 państw, w których żyją tygrysy. Aby zachęcić decydentów do podjęcia dobrych decyzji w sprawie przyszłości tygrysów, zamierzamy powstać i ryknąć w każdy możliwy sposób. Następnie wystarczy zamieścić swój clip na youtube a wszyscy będą mogli zagłosować na najlepszy, najśmieszniejszy czy najstraszniejszy ryk. Każdy, kto zgłosi swoją wersję tygrysiego ryku, będzie umieszczony na petycji do uczestników szczytu. Przerwy szkolne zapewniły nam wystarczający trening w wydawaniu różnych odgłosów. Więc może warto zaistnieć w tym względzie na arenie międzynarodowej? I zabawnie, i w słusznej sprawie.

All Saints' Day

1st November is All Saints’ Day in Poland and it’s a day off - a religious holiday. On that day most Poles visit cemeteries. They put flowers and lit candles on the graves of their relatives and/ or friends. This is a day to remember all those who passed away. On the 1st of November the weather was very nice. It was 18 Celsius degree but the wind was very strong. Some volunteers from our school were present at the cemetery gates to collect money for the charity. People who gave money to support a local hospice were given a symbolic flower.

White Rabbits - Black Figures

Another English text book topic was practically illustrated during the English lesson. We were learning about British superstitions when suddenly two black figures entered the classroom. All students started frantically to look for a button. In Poland, when you see this person, you have to hold your button and make a wish. We don’t say ‘white rabbit” three times on the first day of each month as the British do. What about you? What superstitions are there in your country? And do you know who entered our classroom?

A Fire Drill

Among Polish first graders at primary school a simple story titled “Jak Wojtek został strażakiem” – “How Wojtek became a firefighter” is still popular despite of the fact that it was written by Czesław Janczarski 60 years ago. Moreover, the older students still remember their English text book “Welcome” and the unit 7 “I want to be a firefighter”. Last Friday students had an opportunity to practice a question “What do firefighters usually do?” “They usually fight fires.” However, today … During the fourth lesson a very long bell was heard. It meant that a fire drill started. Students had learnt earlier the fire safety lesson so they knew what to do. All teachers took their Class Attendance Record Books and guide their classes through the school to their destination. This time firefighters didn’t fight fires but they checked the building and watched how the evacuation went.

Halloween

Students from the 5th and 6th grades together with their English teacher celebrated Halloween on Friday evening. Dressed up in scary costumes (monsters, witches, zombies, skeletons, devils), they took part in a competition with questions about Halloween, they hold frightening stries and they organised on activity they fully enjoyed: bobbing for apples. The best of them were rewarded with ’’pumpkin’’diplomes.
