CLIL implementation in the Czech Republic

CLIL has been quite a new method in the Czech Republic. This year many workshops are planned to extend CLIL among Czech teachers and also the amount of possible resources is getting wider.
Here you can check an official website with articles on CLIL for Czech teachers, some of them in English.
I highly recommend this website for those colleagues who would like to start with implementing CLIL into their English lessons.

CLIL

CLIL: Content and Language Integrated Learning

'CLIL refers to situations where subjects, or parts of subjects, are taught through a foreign language with dual-focussed aims, namely the learning of content, and the simultaneous learning of a foreign language'. (Marsh, 1994)

This approach involves learning subjects such as history, geography or others, through an additional language. It can be very successful in enhancing the learning of languages and other subjects, and developing in the youngsters a positive ‘can do’ attitude towards themselves as language learners. (Marsh, 2000)

Can we try with Maths and English? Do you remember The Vampire Park? Now you can visit The Theme Park Arithmetics.

Carnival

Last Friday was Carnival day at Szent József School. Teachers and children were dressed up like in 1960s. We enjoyed our grandmother's bands and songs. There were fine sandwiches and sweets. Classes introduced their rock'n'roll. We were dancing late night.

Environmental Pollution

In class 8 we are sharing our ideas about environmental problems. We have learnt a lot about rainforests. Plants from the forest could give us many new medicine.
Rainforests also help to reduce pollution levels in the atmosphere.

We mustn't pollute rivers.
We must recycle paper, glass, etc.
We mustn't let factories pollute the air.
We must use only unleaded petrol.

Library

Books, books and more books. This is what you can usually see in the library. During the winter break, however, you can meet unusual "readers".
Książki, książki, książki. To jest to, co zazwyczaj widzisz w bibliotece. Jednak podczas zimowych ferii w bibliotece można spotkać niezwykłych "czytelników".

Winter holiday

Since Monday, 15th, Polish students have two-week winter holidays. This year we are lucky because there is plenty of snow. Adults complain about it because it causes a lot of traffic problems but we enjoy going skating and sledging and making snowmen.

Bird feeding

The weather in Dub nad Moravou region has been very cold and snowy so the children from 1st and 2nd grades started working on bird feeders in January and prepared lots of delicious food for local birds. They used seeds, nuts and fat to make tasty and decorated bells which attract hungry birds to our school playground and help them survive this cruel winter.

School Ball in Dub - opening dance of 9th graders.

It has become a tradition in Dub nad Moravou school - the last Friday in January is always a time for a school ball. Parents are in charge of its organizing and students of the highest grade prepare an opening dance. This year they danced waltz, jive and a modern Latin - American dance in rows.At the end each of students gave a nice rose to their form teacher who has been teaching them dancing since September 2009. Don´t they look great? Real young ladies and gentlemen...Let´s hope they will always be as happy as that evening.
In the end of the photo presentation you can see a local parson, Mr. Jan Kornek, who came to see our students. He was wearing a local traditional costume.

Why is the Big Garden Birdwatch in winter? It's cold!

That's precisely why we do it in January. The cold weather brings birds into our gardens, looking for food and shelter, so it's pretty much the best time of the year for watching garden birds.

EMINESCU - the Romanian national poet

15th January 2010

On January 15th students and teachers all over Romania pay homage to our greatest poet, our national poet, Mihai Eminescu (1850-1889). In our country there is hardly anyone who cannot recite at least a few lines of Eminescu’s poems. The musicality of his poetry, the themes he approached (love, nature, eternity, etc) attract readers of all age and education categories.During an activity organized on this occasion, the students in class V-A recited their favourite poems but they also listened to poets such as Adrian Păunescu reciting some of them. Due to their musicality, a large number of these poems are sung in a way that makes anyone shiver with delight. Together with their teachers, the children also listened to a famous Romanian choir, Madrigal, performing Eve on the Hill/ Seara pe deal şi Drowsy Birds/ Somnoroase păsărele.

SOMNOROASE PASARELE-DROWSY BIRDS
Somnoroase pasarele
Pe la cuiburi se aduna,
Se ascund in ramurele -
Noapte buna!

Doar izvoarele suspina,
Pe cind codrul negru tace;
Dorm si florile-n gradina -
Dormi in pace!

Trece lebada pe ape
Intre trestii sa se culce -
Fie-ti ingerii aproape,
Somnul dulce!

Peste-a noptii feerie
Se ridica mindra luna,
Totu-i vis si armonie -
Noapte buna!

Drowsy birds at even gliding,
Round about their nests alight,
In among the branches hiding...
Dear, good night!

Silence through the forest creeping,
Lullaby the river sighs;
In the garden flowers sleeping...
Shut your eyes !

Glides the swan among the rushes
To its rest where moon light gleams,
And the angels whisper hushes...
Peaceful dreams!

O’er the sky stars without number,
On the earth a silver light;
All is harmony and slumber...
Dear, good night !
